It comes from the Old English word hough which means “small protected space” and referred to someone who lived in an enclosed region. In recent years it is sometimes used as a given name. Roots for the name can also be found in the Netherlands and Ireland. The family motto is Fuimus et sub Deo ermus which means “We have been, and we shall be under God.”
