Chambers Family History

Chambers Genealogy & Family Tree

Chambers is a Scottish name from Denbigshire, Wales, where the earliest known Chambers ancestor—John de Chambre—was Constable of Chester. It comes from the Old French word chambre which means “room” and referred to someone with the occupation of a chamberlain or assistant. Roots for this name can also be found in England and France. The family motto is Spero which means “I hope.”

Other spellings include “Chalmers,” “Chamer,” “Chalmairs,” and “Challmers.” Notable people with the surname include American actor Justin Chambers (Grey’s Anatomy, The Wedding Planner, Lakeview Terrace), American actress Erin Chambers (General Hospital, Happy Feet, Alvin and the Chipmunks), American basketball player Tom Chambers (San Diego Clippers, Seattle SuperSonics, Phoenix Suns), and American football player Chris Chambers (Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs). The first Chambers to come to America was James Chambers in Virginia in 1620.
