Pereira Genealogy & Family TreePereira is a Portuguese name from northern Portugal, bordering Spain, where the earliest known ancestor--Don Alvaro Pires de Castro--was granted lands in 1177. It comes from the Spanish word pera which means "pear" and referred to someone who lived near an orchard. Alternately, it may come from the Latin pirum which means "trusted companion." Roots for this name can also be found in Spain, Germany, and France.

Notable people with the surname include American television personality Kevin Pereira (Attack of the Show!, Let's Ask America, Arena), Brazilian model Julia Pereira, and French footballer Michael Pereira (Alfortville, Mallorca B, Granada). The first Pereira to come to the Americas was Simon Pereira in Chile in 1555.
