Edie Sedgwick

Known as the "It Girl" of 1965, Edith Minturn "Edie" Sedgwick was an American socialite, actress, heiress, and fashion model. Born April 20, 1943, in Santa Barbara, California, Sedgwick is best known for being one of Andy Warhol's muses. Sedgwick first met Warhol at a dinner party, who featured her in cameos in two of his films. Sedgwick generated so much buzz even from her brief appearances that Warhol decided to create an entire vehicle around her called Poor Little Rich Girl. Again, Sedgwick proved to be so popular that this turned into a series called The Poor Little Rich Girl Saga. As her popularity grew in mainstream media, Sedgwick began to develop her trademark look: large earrings, black leotards, mini dresses, and short blonde hair. She is said to have had a brief relationship with Bob Dylan, whose songs "Just Like a Woman" and "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" are attributed to her. Sedgwick experienced difficulties with eating disorders, drug problems, and psychotic breakdowns. She married fellow mental hospital inmate Michael Post in 1971. She died of an accidental overdose that year. She is first cousin once removed to actress Kyra Sedgwick, who is married to actor Kevin Bacon.

Edie Sedgwick's last name, "Sedgwick," is an English name which comes from the township of Sedgwick in Heversham, Westmorland. Other spellings include "Sedgewick," "Sedgewicke," and "Sedwick." The first known Sedgwick to come to America was Joseph Sedgwick in Virginia in 1634.
