Known for his band Coldplay and his high-profile marriage, Christopher Anthony John Martin is an English musician, singer, and songwriter, born March 2, 1977, in Exeter, Devon, England. Martin formed his first band while still in school, but they were reportedly so bad at their first concert that they were booed off the stage. While attending University College London, Martin met his future Coldplay bandmates, though they originally called themselves Pectoralz, then Starfish. Their first album, Parachutes, launched the band into fame. Eight other albums and EPs followed, all of which have been successful. In addition, Martin has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Rihanna, Nelly Furtado, and Jay-Z. He's also appeared in a handful of films and television shows, including Shaun of the Dead, Extras, and Bruno. In 2005, he was named the World's Sexiest Vegetarian. He met actress Gwyneth Paltrow while touring for ColdplayĆs second album in 2002. They married the following year and have two children, Apple and Moses.
Chris Martin's last name, "Martin," is an English name derived from the Latin Martinus, referring to the Roman god Mars. The name comes from Leicestershire, England, where the family first held a seat. Other spellings include "Matin," "Mattin," and "Martyn." The first Martin to come to the United States was John Martin in Virginia in 1606.
