An American model, actress, and singer, Cybill Lynne Shepherd was born February 18, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1966, at the age of 16, she won the Miss Teenage Memphis contest, followed by the Model of the Year contest in 1968, launching her fashion career. Polly Platt, then-wife of director Peter Bogdanovich, saw Shepherd on the cover of a magazine and insisted she was perfect for the role of Jacy in his film, The Last Picture Show. Bogdanovich agreed and Shepherd was cast. The movie went on to be a critical and box office hit and made a name for Shepherd in the film industry. She went on to take roles in other films, including The Heartbreak Kid, Daisy Miller, and Taxi Driver. Perhaps Shepherd's most well-known role was in television as Maddie Hayes on Moonlighting opposite Bruce Willis. In 1997, she returned to television after a few more film roles for sitcom Cybill, a role which was loosely modeled after herself. Since then, she has portrayed Martha Stewart in two television films, as well as having recurring roles on The L Word, Psych, and The Client List. She is an outspoken gay rights and abortion rights activist. Shepherd has been married and divorced twice--to David Ford and Bruce Oppenheim--as well as having two longtime partners, Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Martin. She has three children, including actress Clementine Ford, and is currently engaged to boyfriend Andrei Nikolajevic.
Cybill Shepherd's last name, "Shepherd," is an English/Scottish name from Southern England and refers to those who are shepherds or herdsman. The earliest Shepherd variation on record is William Sepherd in Oxfordshire in the 13th Century. Other spellings include "Shephard," "Sheppard," "Sheppeard," and "Shepperd." The first Shepherd to settle in the United States was Ralph Shepherd in Massachusetts in 1635.
